Urban wildlife is wildlife that can live or thrive in urban/suburban environments or around densely populated human settlements such as towns. Some urban wildlife, such as house mice , are synanthropic , ecologically associated with and even evolved to become entirely dependent on human habitats .
It was founded in 1974 as the first urban National Wildlife Refuge established in the United States, and it is dedicated to preserving and enhancing wildlife habitat, protecting migratory birds, protecting threatened and endangered species, and providing opportunities for wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study for the surrounding communities.
As of 2022, there are 588 National Wildlife Refuges in the United States, [1] with the addition of the Green River National Wildlife Refuge. [2] Refuges that have boundaries in multiple states are listed only in the state where the main visitor entrance is located.
