Most explinations state that the afterburner heats the exhaust gasses and increases thrust by virture of the increased exhaust velocity. The exhaust velocity does increase but no mention is given to how or where the rapidly expanding gasses act on the engine to transfer the additional thrust to the engine and airframe.
