Lawnswood is a small suburb in the north west of the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England. As such it is in the north north east of the West Yorkshire Urban Area . The suburb falls within the Adel and Wharefdale Ward of the City of Leeds Council.
The memorial marks the graves of husband and wife Ethel and Walter Preston. [2] The principal feature is a life-sized statue of Ethel, holding a bouquet and wearing the costume of a choir that she sang in. [3] [2] Ethel stands within a classical-style porch rendered in white Italian marble, reputedly modelled after the portico of the Prestons' house (now demolished), the Grange in Beeston.

Possibly Spruce's best known work is the 1918 large multi-figure memorial to the Leeds businessman Sam Wilson at Lawnswood Cemetery in Leeds. The monument is recognised by Historic England with a Grade II listing. [8] Spruce was also a noted member of the Leeds branch of the Savage Club, becoming its "Indian Chief" (i.e. president) in 1912. [4]
Keith Smith was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, he became a postman, and coached junior rugby league at East Leeds A.R.L.F.C., he was diagnosed with cancer, he died aged 53 in St. Gemma's Hospice, Leeds, West Yorkshire, and his funeral took place at Lawnswood Crematorium, Leeds at 9.40am on Friday 9 June 2006.
