A primitive trail receives the least visitation of all trails. The National Park Service does not regularly maintain primitive trails, but reconstructs sections damaged by environmental forces only in cases where its existing condition creates a hazard. Multiple trail eradication is done to prevent accidental off-trail hiking.

From here the trail follows the Colorado north (upstream) to its confluence with the Little Colorado River. The trail is considered primitive, and some route finding is required. The Tonto Trail crosses the South Bass Trail a mile from the Colorado River. From this junction, to the west is Elves Chasm and the terminus of the Royal Arch Route, and to the east is the Boucher Trail and Hermit Trail, which provide access to the south rim via Hermit's Rest. The campgrounds located at the end of the Clear Creek Trail. The trail begins near the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) north of Phantom Ranch at a junction with the North Kaibab Trail. From the trail head, the trail ascends 1,150 feet (350 m) to the Tonto Platform over the first 1.7 miles (2.7 km).
