The first railway line in Bangladesh was laid in 1862 by the British Raj. At that time Bangladesh didn't exist and its land was part of the Bengal Presidency. On 15 November of that year, Eastern Bengal Railway, the predecessor of Bangladesh Railway, opened the first railway line from Darshana railway station to Jagati railway station.

Then on September 29, 1862, the Eastern Bengal Railway opened the rail line from Kolkata to Ranaghat. Extending this line, a 53.11-km Broad gauge railway line section was unveiled on November 15 that year until Jagati in Kushtia. At that time, the first railway station of East Bengal, Jagati, was established.
The Shonar Bangla Express (Train no. 787/788) is an inter-city rail service run by Bangladesh Railway. This service provides a swift and luxurious passenger rail connection between the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka to the port city of Chattogram. This service only has one intermediate stop at Dhaka Airport. [1]
The reverse journey starts from Panchagarh at 12.30; Thakurgaon Road at 13:10; Pirganj railway station at 13:35 and reaches Kamalapur Railway Station at 21.55 pm. On its return route, it stops at Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Parbitpur and Dhaka Airport stations. The approximate times are 1.53 pm, 3.02 pm, 3.55 pm and 10.03 pm respectively. [1]
After few days this train route extended up to Chapainawabganj. Now its running Chapainawabganj-Rajashahi to Dhaka. The train has modern facilities like bio-toilet, recliner chair, Wi-Fi connections, LED display, and save at least one and a half hour journey time than those of the existing three express trains plying between Dhaka and Rajshahi.
On 16 December 2016, railway coaches of Ekota Express along with Drutojan Express were changed with newer ones imported from Indonesia. [3] On 11 November 2018, the route of Ekota and Drutojan Express were extended from Dhaka–Dinajpur to Dhaka–Panchagarh. As a result, the shuttle train service between Dinajpur and Panchagarh was closed. [2]
