The University of Sri Lanka was a public university in Sri Lanka. Established in 1972 by amalgamating the four existing universities, it was the only university in Sri Lanka from 1972 until 1978. The university was based at six campuses in Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and Jaffna.
Faculty of Medicine is situated at the Galaha Junction, Peradeniya, on the other side of the entrance to the Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya.In addition to the buildings located in the main campus, faculty operates a rural field practice area known as "Hindagala Community Health Project" covering 62 square kilometers and with a population of 20,000.
On 4 March 2021, the institute was officially launched as the 16th National University of Sri Lanka by president Gotabaya Rajapaksa. [2] The university not only focuses on indigenous medicine but also includes programs in technology and modern medicine.
