The building is named in honor of Lorenzo de Zavala, a statesman in Texas history. Built in 1959 and inaugurated in 1961, [3] the building houses the headquarters of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and is located east of and adjacent to the Texas State Capitol, and made of the same pink granite as the capitol building. [4]
In 1943 Driscoll donated the homesite to be used as a city museum. In 1961, the site was converted to the Laguna Gloria Art Museum and became an important part of the Austin arts scene. Soon after, the museum began offering art classes, and in 1983, a 5,300-square-foot (490 m 2) facility was built specifically for the growing art school.
The areas in and around Austin have been the site of human habitation since at least 9,000 B.C., and possibly considerably before that. The earliest known inhabitants of the area, during the late Pleistocene (Ice Age), can be linked to the Clovis people around 9200 B.C. just west of Williamson County. [6]
