The name "Hotel du Vin" was a reference to Basset's wine expertise. At the time Basset was a Master Sommelier ; he went on to become a Master of Wine (1998). KSL Capital Partners purchased the Hotel du Vin chain and the Malmaison hotel chain early in 2013, before selling both hotel brands to Frasers Hospitality for £363m in 2015.

The hotel was opened by Ken McCulloch in 1986 [3] in Number One, although it has since expanded to occupy all five houses, Number Four being the last acquired. [4] The hotel now has forty-nine bedrooms, [ 5 ] and in 2006 was acquired by the Hotel du Vin chain, which also operates Malmaison hotels.
