Basel (/ ˈ b ɑː z əl /, BAH-zəl; German: ⓘ), also known as Basle, [note 1] is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the River Rhine (at the transition from the High to the Upper Rhine). [4] Basel is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zurich and Geneva), with 177,595 inhabitants within the city municipality limits. [5]
Here, at the Rhine knee, the river turns north and leaves Switzerland altogether. The High Rhine is characterized by numerous dams. On the few remaining natural sections, there are still several rapids. Over its entire course from Lake Constance to the Swiss border at Basel the river descends from 395 to 252 m (1,296 to 827 ft).
The Aare (Swiss Standard German: ⓘ) or Aar (Swiss Standard German: ⓘ) is the main tributary of the High Rhine (its discharge even exceeds that of the latter at their confluence) [2] and the longest river that both rises and ends entirely within Switzerland. [3] [4]
The banks of the Rhine River in Basel, Switzerland. Monica Humphries/Business Insider. I spent six days in the Swiss city of Basel, exploring the town's rich art scene.
Swiss rivers belong to five drainage basins, i.e. of the Rhine, the Rhône, the Po, the Danube or the Adige. Of these, only the Rhine and Rhône flow through Switzerland (and also originate there). The waters therefore drain into either the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea or the Black Sea.
Chur [note 1] [note 2] is the capital and largest town of the Swiss canton of the Grisons and lies in the Grisonian Rhine Valley, where the Rhine turns towards the north, in the northern part of the canton. The city, on the right bank of the Rhine, is reputedly the oldest town in Switzerland. [3]
