Clinton County was formed on December 21, 1837. It was named for DeWitt Clinton, [3] a Governor of New York and most ardent advocate for the construction of the Erie Canal. The cities of DeWitt and Clinton were also named after him. In 1835, Elijah Buell built a log cabin for himself and his family and was thus the first settler of the region.

De Witt Township covers an area of 54.48 square miles (141.1 km 2) and contains one incorporated settlement, De Witt. According to the USGS, it contains two cemeteries: Elmwood and Saint Joseph. Crystal Lake is within this township. The streams of Ames Creek, Crystal Creek, Rock Creek and Silver Creek run through this township.

The Iowa 561 freeway was dedicated and opened to traffic on December 1, 1982. [63] After the new highway opened, there remained two segments of the old road–a short section between I-80 and Mount Joy and a longer stretch from Mount Joy to De Witt. The latter road was renamed Iowa 956 and the former Iowa 960; both of which were unsigned highways.
