Prior to the formal opening of the county, Bellevue was laid out by John D. Bell in 1835. He built a cabin there and was the town's first postmaster. [6] [7] The first hotel was built by Peter Dutell in 1836, and was called the Bellevue House. [8] When Iowa became a territory in 1838, the first census was taken and Jackson County had 881 people.
Lock and Dam No. 12 is a lock and dam located on the Upper Mississippi River at Bellevue, Iowa, United States.The movable portion of the dam starts at the locks adjacent to the Iowa shore and is 849 feet (258.8 m) long, consisting of seven tainter gates and three roller gates.
The non-movable portion of the dam continues toward the Iowa shore with a 200 feet (61.0 m) storage yard, a 728 feet (221.9 m) non-submersible dike, a 1,650 feet (502.9 m) submersible dike, and a 1,315 feet (400.8 m) non-submersible dike with two 90 feet (27.4 m) transitional sections between the submersible and non-submersible sections.
Spring Side is a historic residence located just outside of Bellevue, Iowa, United States. The house was influenced by the Gothic Revival "cottage" popularized by A.J. Davis and A.J. Downing. [2] It is sited on a hillside overlooking a valley and the Mississippi River. The property is the source for three springs, hence its name from 1867.
