The Illinois State Fairgrounds is located in Springfield, Illinois. [1] It hosts the annual Illinois State Fair in the summer as well as other events throughout the year. The fairgrounds encompasses 366 acres of land and was added as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. [ 2 ]
The Illinois State Fair mile currently hosts the Allen Crowe Memorial 100 ARCA stock car race, USAC Silver Crown dirt cars, UMP Late Models and Modifieds and the A.M.A. Grand National Championship. The only driver who has won races in three disciplines of racing in Ken Schrader who won in ARCA cars (1998), UMP Modifieds (1998), and midgets.
The first race was held August 25, 1963. [2] That race was won by NASCAR driver Curtis Turner. [3]USAC's stock car division sanctioned the race from the race's inception in 1963, until the series' demise in 1984. 1972's race was an odd occurrence, in that Al Unser won the USAC Stock car race on Saturday, and then won the USAC Championship Dirt Car race the following day. In August, the city is the site of the Illinois State Fair at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Although not born in Springfield, Lincoln is the city's most famous resident. He lived there for 24 years. [16] The only home he ever owned is open to the public, seven days a week, free of charge, and operated by the National Park Service. [16]
