Wintrust is a financial holding company in the United States that operates 15 chartered community banks in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. [2] Wintrust is usually classified as a medium-sized banking institution in the United States and it trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market with stock symbol WTFC.
The bank was placed into government conservatorship in February 1990, [4] with Great Western Bank acquiring the bank's assets in June 1990. [5] CenTrust had $8.2 billion in assets at that time and was the 23rd largest thrift in the country. The failure resulted in an estimated $1.7 billion loss to the government at the time it was seized.

The name on the building was changed to "Union Planters" and later to "Regions" when Regions Bank merged with Union Planters in 2004. In 2005, when Hurricane Wilma hit Fort Lauderdale, One Financial Plaza (along with the rest of the city's skyline) suffered some damage, including a large gash that stretched from the 14th to the 19th floors.
