Vanguard Sailboats was founded in 1967 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA by Peter and Olaf Harken. The brothers started to gain attention after their sailing hardware was used on boats that won Olympic gold in 1968 , and after Vanguard supplied the Finn class for several countries in the 1976 Olympics .
The Pearson Vanguard is a sloop-rigged sailboat designed in 1962 by Philip Rhodes. These boats were built by Pearson Yachts from 1963 to 1967. Pearson Vanguards are a traditional cruiser known for world travel.
The design was built by Bruce's company, Performance Sailcraft, in Canada and also by Vanguard Sailboats in the United States. The Pearson Renegade is a 27' sloop rigged sailboat produced by Pearson Yachts of Bristol, RI from 1966-1969, with the first boats being sold in 1967. Designed by William Shaw, about 175 of the boats were built. They were Pearson's first split underbody boat and were designed to Cruising Club of America racing rules.
The boat is much more simple to sail, yet lacks the performance of the original dinghy due to its extra weight. The Club 420 is used extensively on the youth race circuit in the US, with over 5,000 boats in North America, [6] but is not sailed in most other countries. It cannot be used at I420 class events.
