A Guardian profile of the group from 1993 noted that Lowe's image of "silent Chris walking two steps behind singing Neil" was an intentional choice, developed in discussion with photographer and music video director Eric Watson; Watson has said that "Chris didn't want to be seen playing keyboards or anything. We realised there was something ...
Pet Shop Boys are an English synth-pop duo formed in London, in 1981.Consisting of primary vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe, they have sold more than 100 million records worldwide [4] and were listed as the most successful duo in UK music history in the 1999 edition of The Guinness Book of Records.
"The Night I Fell in Love" is a song on the Pet Shop Boys' 2002 album Release. The lyrics were written by Neil Tennant and the music co-written with Chris Lowe.. The song describes a homosexual encounter between a teenage boy (who is telling the story) and his rap music idol after a concert.
The B-side, "We All Feel Better in the Dark" was written around a piece of music Chris Lowe had composed and features him as the lead vocalist. He said that "The idea came from a tape I bought from a health food shop round the corner from the studio: The Secrets of Sexual Attraction. The words are terrible. Awful. Embarrassing."
Tennant came up with the phrase "It's a sin" when he heard Lowe play a piece of music that sounded to him like a hymn. [11] In the lyrics, he describes some impressions he took from his time at the Catholic [5] St Cuthbert's Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne, in particular the teaching that sex is a sin except within marriage for the purpose of procreation.
The track includes Chris Lowe in one of his rare lead-vocals performances, singing through a vocoder. The Boys claimed [citation needed] to have been unaware at the time of release that Euroboy was also the name of a softcore gay pornographic magazine. It was occasionally performed live on the Asian leg of the band's 1994 Discovery tour.
Lowe was 24 when he videotaped himself having sex with a 16-year-old girl, a decision he now acknowledges was fueled by "fame, money and drugs." The two had reportedly met inside an over-21 nightclub.
The cover, featuring Chris Lowe in a baseball cap emblazoned with "BOY" in block letters, has become an iconic Pet Shop Boys image. Neil Tennant later recollected that he had expected the image of the cap to be the group's coming out moment, calling it "incredibly gay".
