Most amethyst will turn yellow or orange when heated, producing heat-treated amethysts which are often marketed as citrine, but some amethyst will turn green when treated. Currently, almost all prasiolite on the market is made from amethyst via a process of heating and irradiation. [5]
Heat can either improve or spoil gemstone color or clarity. The heating process has been well known to gem miners and cutters for centuries, and in many stone types heating is a common practice. Most citrine is made by heating amethyst, and partial heating with a strong gradient results in "ametrine" – a stone partly amethyst and partly citrine.
Prasiolite, an olive colored material, is produced by heat treatment; [74] natural prasiolite has also been observed in Lower Silesia in Poland. [75] Although citrine occurs naturally, the majority is the result of heat-treating amethyst or smoky quartz. [74] Carnelian has been heat-treated to deepen its color since prehistoric times. [76]
It is a mixture of amethyst and citrine with zones of purple and yellow or orange. Almost all commercially available ametrine is mined in Bolivia. The colour of the zones visible within ametrine are due to differing oxidation states of iron within the crystal. The citrine segments have oxidized iron while the amethyst segments are unoxidized.
