The Paswan, also known as Dusadh, are a Dalit community from eastern India. [1] They are found mainly in the states of Bihar , [ 2 ] Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand . The Urdu word Paswan means bodyguard or "one who defends".

Among Dalits in Bihar, Chamars are the largest 31.3%, followed by Paswans (Dusadh) 30.9% and Musahars 13.9%. [72] The Paswan caste was initially left out of the Mahadalit category, [73] to the consternation of Ram Vilas Paswan. [74] [75] Chamars were included later in Mahadalit category.
The root cause was caste conflict between Paswan landless peasants and Kurmi landlords. This massacre parted the way between Kurmis and Paswans and made them sceptical of each other's activities. Mahavir Mahto was accused of the carnage in which Dusadh people were the victim. [5]

Paswan was born in a Dusadh family on 5 July 1946 in Shaharbanni, Khagaria district of Bihar to Jamun Paswan and Siya Devi. [10] [11] Paswan held Bachelor of Laws and Master of Arts degrees from Kosi College, Khagaria and Patna University. [12] He had been selected as a DSP in Bihar Police in 1969. [13] [14]
