Alaska Coastal Airlines was formed in 1939 as a result of a merger between Alaska Air Transport and Marine Airways. Having absorbed Ellis Air Lines in 1962, Alaska Coastal Airlines was itself taken over by Alaska Airlines in 1968. Barnhill & McGee Airways was founded in Anchorage in 1931, one of the earliest air services in Anchorage.

Alaska Airlines announced a plan in June 2013 to begin replacing Boeing 737s on flights between Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska, with Bombardier Q400s operated by Horizon Air and based out of Anchorage beginning in March 2014. The plan was intended to reduce operating expenses and eventually lower fares.
According to the July 1, 2016 Alaska Airlines system timetable, PenAir was then operating all of its code sharing flights in the state of Alaska on behalf of Alaska Airlines with Saab 340B and Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft. The Saab 2000 is a larger, high-speed version of the Saab 340B.
