The most striking feature of Paoay Church is the 24 huge buttresses [10] of about 1.67 metres (5.5 ft) [5] thick at the sides and back of the church building. Extending from the exterior walls, it was conceived to a solution to possible destruction of the building due to earthquakes.
The ownership of the church was contested by the Aglipayans from the Roman Catholic from which the Catholic church won ownership. [1] The church facade was renovated by adding lime plaster in 1936. It became a cathedral when the Diocese of Laoag was created in 1961. The church was again renovated from 1971 to 1972.
Paoay Church, Ilocos Norte. The Paoay Church, also known as the Church of San Agustín, is located in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. It is the most outstanding example in the Philippines of an Earthquake Baroque style architecture.
