Ida Lewis was born in Newport, Rhode Island, the second oldest of four children of Captain Hosea Lewis of the Revenue-Marine.Her father was transferred to the Lighthouse Service and appointed keeper of Lime Rock Light on the small near-island Lime Rock in Newport in 1854, taking his family to live on the rock in 1857. Lime Rock is an island located 600 feet offshore in Newport Harbor, in Narragansett Bay, in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It was made famous by Ida Lewis, the lighthouse keeper of the tower built on it in 1854 which is now known as Ida Lewis Rock Light. [1]
The museum was founded by veteran Cleveland judges Basil M. Russo and Deborah J. Nicastro on Columbus Day 2020, [1] replacing one that had closed in 2007. [2] A soft opening to the public was held in July 2021, [5] with an official grand opening on October 1, 2021. [6]

The original Fresnel lens is on display at the Museum of Newport History. The lighthouse is maintained as the clubhouse of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. They have a light as a private aid during part of the year. [2] The Ida Lewis Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places, No. 87001700.
