U.S. Highway 29 (US 29) is a United States Numbered Highway that runs for 168.7 miles (271.5 km) from the South Carolina state line, near Blacksburg, to the commonwealth of Virginia, near Danville. It is signed with north–south cardinal directions but is actually a northeast and southwest diagonal highway throughout the state.
The interchange between Interstate 85, US Highway 74, and US Highway 29 is to the east of the city. Kings Mountain is also served by two North Carolina State Highways: NC-161 with service to Bessemer City and York, and NC-216 with service to Cherryville. Greyhound Lines began scheduled intercity bus service on April 20, 2010.
The second and current NC 161 was established in 1937 as a renumbering of NC 215 to match SC 161; it ran from the South Carolina state line to U.S. Route 29 (US 29) and US 74 (now US 74 Business) in Kings Mountain. In 1939, the highway was extended northeast to NC 274 Bessemer City replacing US 29A/US 74A. [2]

U.S. Highway 29A (US 29A) was a short-lived alternate route in Bessemer City, North Carolina, that was established in 1937 after mainline US 29/US 74 was rerouted on a more direct path from Kings Mountain to Gastonia. In 1938, it was decommissioned and renumbered as parts of North Carolina Highway 161 (NC 161) and NC 274. [22]
