And, yes, check out the youth models. Sometimes, as in my case, the best home defense gun for a woman is a Glock 17 (or other). I got mine way back during the (he)Clinton gun ban years. There are lots of other really good higher capacity handguns now from which to choose.
Remington and Mossberg make their famous pump shotguns the 870 and Mossberg 500 in 12, 20, and I believe 410. The general assumption is that women are more sensitive to recoil, but I've seen women shoot 500 S&W, 300 Win Mag, and other powerful cartridges at the range.

A plain 870 will be sufficient for home defense, but maybe a fiber optic front sight and some sort of light set up wouldn't hurt, especially if you don't keep any lights on in the house after going to bed. The best mod you can do to any gun is buy ammo and train with it.
The Ghost ring allows one to use a shotgun at ranges further than traditional beads do. My home defense shotgun has Ghost Ring Sights and a Surefire Light added for a reason. I'm a fan of accurate use of the shotgun, and think the rifle gets too much "play" in city environments where people would be better served with a shotgun IMHO.
