The British Council was founded in 1934 in London. [6] It opened its first branch in Dhaka in 1951 when Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan. [2] On 25 March 1971, at the start of Bangladesh Liberation War, the council office was attacked by Pakistan army, killing 8 East Pakistan Police officers guarding the office. [7]
It is designed for students between the ages of eight and eleven. [25] The test is divided into 3 sections: reading and listening – step 1, reading and listening – step 2, and speaking. Depending on the fluency of students' English, they will be expected to take either the step 1 or step 2 test.
The Manarat trust established an English medium kindergarten school in 1979, named Manarat Dacca. In 1985 the school was renamed as Manarat Dhaka International School. The students of the school have also been acknowledged as active participants of the 2024 Bangladesh Quota reform movement. While, the school section was not able to participate physically for the most part. The students have played a significant role in banter towards it and spreading information regarding the movement.
The school offers extracurricular activities such as debating, French, science fairs, art competitions, and has athletic teams for basketball, football, and volleyball. It has a debating club run by the students and teachers and a green world earth club. The students participate in the National Debating Championships in the English language.
