Feb 8, 2017. #9. Opinels are interesting and they do cut extremely well. But you have to screw around with them. A little sanding in the blade slot, and to smooth out the shape of handle is needed. Then you have to do some kind of oil or wax treatment to give the wood some water resistance. A mineral oil soak, or some melted snow seal or ...
Jul 4, 2015. #7. MAM makes a good knife -- I have a spearpoint w/liner lock and it's about the same length as the Opinel #9 but a lot thinner stocks, so it rides easier in the pocket.
Opinel are excellent knives. They work and work well. I find them comfortable to use in-hand but perhaps less so in the pocket when I'm wearing jeans. Nevertheless, they are fantastic folders! As for me, if I didn't like knives so much and didn't feel the need to rotate between several different models, I'd just carry my Vic Pioneer all the time.
It has NO secondary bevel. The blade is also very thin. My budget is upto $125, lower the better. Basically I'm looking for a regular folding knife with a common lock (liner, backlock, etc..) with Opinel-like blade grind. Knives I am NOT looking for, is stuff like Spyderco Manix 2 as it has a secondary bevel. Thanks.
57. Sep 19, 2021. #1. One of my current EDC knives is an Opinel No 8. It’s a great pocket knife and has served me well whenever I’ve needed it. Deployment is obviously a little slow as it’s not possible to open it one handed. That aside it’s a good sturdy knife. anyone have any thoughts on Opinel?
Disassemble knife, lightly sand off orange-y finish with 220 grit paper. Apply generous coat of 100% tung oil (available at woodcraft) thinned by half with mineral spirits. Keep applying until the wood stops soaking it up, then wipe off excess. A couple of days later, repeat with full strength tung oil.
Pictured are MAM Douro, medium Old Bear, and Opinel No.8. The MAM and Antonini have handles that are slightly flattened, and so carry easier than an unmodified Opinel. I have about a dozen Opinels, and two each from the other two makers, which should reveal my preferences. I favor the slightly convex blade of the Opinel, particularly in Carbone ...
And remember, all Opinel's prior to 1955, were friction folders. It was in 1955 that a lawyer gave some advise to Marrsel Opinel that they needed a lock on the blade. After all, millions of users had been using Opinel's since 1890 with no locks at all, and they still had all their fingers. Last edited: Oct 5, 2023.
7,648. Oct 4, 2023. #18. The Grendels said: The ring lock works fine and in a time when thick blades are all the rage, it's one of the thinnest, sliciest ones you'll find. I was cutting through thick blackberry bushes recently with my Opinel No. 15 Slim, to clear a footprint for a ladder, so I could pick fruit from a tree.
5,095. Jul 17, 2008. #4. They have some of the best from factory blade geometry I've seen in a knife, though they come dull in my experience and need an edge put on them before they see any real use. They are lightweight, comfortable and the lock ring does its job well. As an EDC I prefer something with a spyder hole and pocket clip, but if you ...
