The Wright Flyer (also known as the Kitty Hawk, [3] [4] Flyer I or the 1903 Flyer) made the first sustained flight by a manned heavier-than-air powered and controlled aircraft—an airplane—on December 17, 1903. [1] Invented and flown by brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright, it marked the beginning of the pioneer era of aviation.

Orville Wright made a successful demonstration to the Army on 3 September 1908. On 17 September 1908 a flight was made with Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge on board as an official observer. A few minutes into the flight at an altitude of about 100 feet (30 m), a propeller split and shattered, sending the Flyer out of control.

Rex (1985) has demonstrated that the 1903 Wright Flyer was so unstable as to be almost unmanageable by anyone but the Wrights, who had trained themselves in the 1902 glider.
