The Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site is located in Tijeras at 35° 04′ 30″ N, 106° 23′ 01.″ The site was occupied by Ancestral Pueblo people from about 1313 CE to 1425 CE. In the first phase of its occupation the Tijeras Pueblo had about 200 rooms in terraced buildings arranged in a "U" shape with a large ceremonial Kiva at the center.
The formation is exposed along a belt 1 mile (1.6 km) and 5.5 miles (8.9 km) long in Tijeras Canyon east of Albuquerque, New Mexico.It is a sequence of metavolcanic and metasedimentary beds, typically dark green in color, with its texture varying from unfoliated to strongly schistose. [1]
Its buildings and excavations dominate the portion of the canyon and surrounding hills southwest of the town of Tijeras. [3] In 1950, the Tijeras Canyon job was the largest road project ever let in the State of New Mexico. It also carried the honor of being the first U. S. Route 66 four-lane divided highway built in New Mexico.
