Darth Maul is a character in the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas.He first appeared in the prequel film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). Maul returned in the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008–2014; 2020) and Star Wars Rebels (2014–2018), as well as the standalone film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
Finding Maul a shell of his former self on a junk planet, Opress manages to stir up his fellow nightbrother's grudge with Obi-Wan to aid him in his revenge against the Jedi. He is later killed in a duel by Darth Sidious on Mandalore. The character has been voiced by Clancy Brown in The Clone Wars.

Maul's debut in the second season of Rebels was thus intended to be a one-off appearance; his death was to be at the hands of Darth Vader, but the writers felt that the two characters lacked an emotional connection and that Maul's death would overcomplicate an already loaded episode with Ahsoka Tano's confrontation with Vader.
Before Maul dies, Obi-Wan confirms to him that his purpose on Tatooine is to protect the "Chosen One." The threat now eliminated, Obi-Wan continues his secret mission of watching over a young Luke Skywalker (the secret biological son of Darth Vader) whom he believes to be the "Chosen One", destined to bring balance to the Force and defeat the Sith.
The plot follows Darth Maul, who was captured by Darth Sidious at the end of the season 5 episode "The Lawless". He is tortured by Count Dooku for information about the Shadow Collective and the allies Maul has made. Maul escapes and heads to Zanbar to command the Death Watch army, but is followed by General Grievous and his droids.
Padmé, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan return to Naboo, where they once again encounter the dark warrior, who reveals himself to be the Sith Lord Darth Maul. During a ferocious lightsaber battle, Maul mortally wounds Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan responds by killing Maul, then promises his dying master that he will train Anakin.
