The Bridgewater Hall is a concert venue in Manchester city centre, England. It cost around £42 million to build in the 1990s, [ 2 ] and hosts over 250 performances a year. It is home to the 165-year-old Hallé Orchestra as well as to the Hallé Choir and Hallé Youth Orchestra and it serves as the main concert venue for the BBC Philharmonic .
The orchestra moved from the Free Trade Hall to the Bridgewater Hall in 1996 as its primary concert venue. During his tenure, Nagano received criticism for his expensive and ambitious programming, as well as his conducting fees. [9] However, poor financial management at the orchestra separately contributed to the fiscal troubles of the orchestra.
The Hallé Orchestra moved to the Bridgewater Hall in 1996 and the Free Trade Hall was closed by Manchester City Council. In 1997, the building was sold to private developers despite resistance from groups such as the Manchester Civic Society, who viewed the sale as inappropriate given the historical significance of the building and its site.
The Society organises a diverse programme of Concerts and, during its history, has programmed more than 2500 performances. [5] In its Centenary Year (2015), the Society welcomed the World Premiere of Edward Gregson’s String Quartet and performances by Jennifer Pike, Mi Luna, Craig Ogden, The Navarra Quartet and Peter Donohoe.
