St Illtyd's Church is a church complex in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, southeast Wales. It is located at the site of the oldest college in the United Kingdom, once believed to have been founded as Côr Tewdws c. AD 395 by the Roman Emperor Theodosius II .
Inside the church is an elaborate tomb of John Bassett (John ap Thomas Bassett, died 1554) and his second wife Elizabeth (died 1596). John Bassett was a lawyer and the Surveyor of Lands to Queen Catherine Parr , and is thought to have built Llantrithyd Place.
The parish church accurately glosses the Welsh name of the town rather literally as "Illtud's Great Church". [3] However, the name used in English means "Greater". The epithet fawr distinguishes this Llantwit from Llantwit Fardre (Llanilltud Faerdref) near Pontypridd and Llantwit Minor (Llanilltud Fach; also known as Llantwit-juxta-Neath and Lower Llantwit) [4] near Neath.
