Oskaloosa was founded in 1856. [4] It was named after the city of Oskaloosa, Iowa. [5] The first post office in Oskaloosa was established in November 1856. [6]In 1888, Oskaloosa citizens elected Mary D. Lowman mayor with a city council composed entirely of women, making the city the first in the state to elect an all-women city administration.
The community is served by McLouth USD 342 public school district, which administers the elementary, middle and high schools on one campus. The buildings are attached and share some facilities. The district offers special education for 3 and 4 year olds, a 4year old at risk program, and kindergarten through 12th grade.
