The University of Alberta (also known as U of A or UAlberta, French: Université de l'Alberta) is a public research university located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was founded in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford , [ 8 ] the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory , [ 9 ] the university's first president.
The UASU was founded in 1908 following the opening of the University of Alberta. Despite the university having a small student body of only 45 students, the original UASU consisted of eight elected representatives.
Alberta has won 29 championships since 1973, more than all other schools combined, including 13 of 15 from 2001 to 2015. The result of which has been that the Golden Bears are the most successful program in U Sports, with 16 national championships and 44 tournament appearances, far more than the next best schools (as of 2024). The Golden Bears first won a U Sports men's volleyball championship in 1981 and have won nine national championships in total, including the most recent in 2024, which is tied for the most out of all of the U Sports men's volleyball programs. [19] The program has also featured 17 Canada West conference champions, most recently in 2024. [20]
