The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is the state corrections agency for the U.S. state of Nebraska. NDCS currently has 9 institutions confining over 5,000 inmates . All male inmates coming into the system enter through the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center where they are evaluated and assigned to other facilities.
In August 2023, the Nebraska Department of Corrections purchased a 300 acre parcel north of Lincoln [1] on which a new 1,512 capacity multi-custody replacement facility for the penitentiary will be constructed. [2] Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2024 with an anticipated completion date of the fall of 2026.
