Tony Krajewski Thurmond (born August 21, 1968) is an American politician and educator, serving as the 28th California State Superintendent of Public Instruction since 2019. Thurmond was narrowly elected Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2018 over his opponent, Marshall Tuck , [ 1 ] and reelected in 2022 .
The superintendent is elected to a four-year term, serves as the state's chief spokesperson for public schools, provides education policy and direction to local school districts, and also serves as an ex officio member of governing boards of the state's higher education system.
