Probably originating as a ditch dug in 1157 between Abbiategrasso and Landriano as a defense against Frederick Barbarossa, it was one of the largest medieval engineering projects, allowing development of commerce, transport and agriculture.

The Naviglio della Martesana (Lombard: Nivili de la Martexana or Martesanna [niˈʋiːri de la marteˈzana]) is a canal in the Lombardy region, Northern Italy.Running from the Adda river, in the vicinity of Trezzo sull'Adda, to Milan, it was also known as Naviglio Piccolo (Lombard: Navijett [naʋiˈjɛt]).
It is sited along the ancient "Navigli Ring" on the perimeter of the medieval walls of the city. Originally built in the twelfth century, Porta Nuova was restored in the nineteenth century with the insertion of two lateral passages next to the two central arcs and the addition of some ancient Roman steles on the external facade of the gate.
