Metrocentre is a shopping centre and entertainment complex in the Dunston area of Gateshead. It is located on the former site of Dunston Power Station , near to the River Tyne . Metrocentre opened in stages, with the first phase opening on 28 April 1986, and the official opening being held on 14 October that year.

Beatties was founded by Colonel S N Beattie and Charles Whale as the Southgate Model Shop. In the early 1960s they had two small shops on Winchmore Hill Road in London. Looking away from the tube station the one on the right sold new model railway equipment and the one on the left was full of used stuff.
Metrocentre Interchange serves the Metrocentre in Gateshead. The bus station was originally constructed in the late 1980s, opened in 1987. [1] In the early 2000s, the former bus station was demolished, with the current bus station opened in October 2004. The 1970s were financially damaging and by 1980 the Shephards business had closed. The Gateshead store was purchased by Tesco which created Tesco Shopping City, where store space was rented to other retailers. This was not a successful venture, especially after the opening of the Metrocentre in 1986, and subsequently closed. [1]
