Koo In-hwoi is the 14th generation descendant of Gu Sa-min (구사민; 具思閔), the younger brother of Gu Sa-maeng (구사맹; 具思孟) as well the uncle of Queen Inheon. Both of them were 12th generation descendants of Gu Seong-ro (구성로; 具成老), an officer who accompanied Yi Seong-gye during Wihwado Retreat.
Koo In-hwoi led the corporation until his death in 1969, at which time, his son Koo Cha-kyung took over. He then passed the leadership to his son, Koo Bon-moo, in 1995. Koo Bon-moo renamed the company to LG in that year. [5] The company then trademarked the letters LG with the company's tagline "Life's Good".
Founded in 1947, Koo In-Hwoi (Founder of LG Corp) established Lucky Chemical Industrial Corp, and launched "Lucky Cream," the very first cosmetics product in Korea. In 1954, the company also launched Korea's first toothpaste brand, 'Lucky Toothpaste'. In February 1995, the company changed its name to LG Chemical Ltd.
In 1995, Koo succeeded his father Koo Cha-kyung, the oldest son of LG's founder Koo In-hwoi [4] as chairman of LG Group because of the Koo family's “male-only succession rule". [5] Koo Bon-moo adopted his nephew Koo Kwang-mo in 2004, after losing his only son in 1994. [6] Starting in 2017, Koo Bon-moo sought continual treatment for a brain tumor.
Koo was born 24 April 1925 in Jinju, Korea, Empire of Japan to Koo In-Hwoi, who went on to found GoldStar and Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp, a plastics manufacturer and, later, a producer of toiletries. Koo began his career at Lak Hui where he managed production lines for 20 years.
