The need for a Canadian soil science textbook had long been discussed by members of the Soil Education Committee of the Canadian Society of Soil Science, and in 2018, a proposal to forge ahead with the development of an introductory soil science textbook was enthusiastically supported by the membership of the CSSS at its annual general meeting.
As well as publishing in traditional aspects of soil biology, soil physics and soil chemistry across terrestrial ecosystems, the journal also publishes manuscripts dealing with wider interactions of soils with the environment. It was established in 1963 as the Australian Journal of Soil Research and obtained its current title in 2011.
