It was officially opened on 28 October 1933, and the first cremation took place on 30 October 1933. [1] Northern Suburbs Crematorium was the second crematorium in New South Wales. It was designed by Frank I'Anson Bloomfield (1879–1949), who was cremated there, and also designed NSW and Sydney's first crematorium at Rookwood Cemetery.
The Board of Trustees were the plaintiffs in the landmark Northern Suburbs General Cemetery Reserve Trust v Commonwealth High Court of Australia case in 1993. With the introduction of the chapels and crematorium, the name of the park was changed in 2004 from Northern Suburbs General Cemetery to its current name.
The Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium (formerly known as the Northern Suburbs General Cemetery) North Ryde opened in 1922 . The cemetery is situated on 59 hectares of Crown land on Delhi Road directly opposite the entrance to the underground metro North Ryde railway station. It was also originally part of the Field of Mars Common. [40]
The cemetery is managed by Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries NSW (officially "Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Land Manager"), consisting of Woronora Memorial Park and Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, which replaced the Botany Cemetery Trust and Eastern Suburbs Crematorium Trust upon gazettal on 3 August 2012.
