Subroto was born to a Bengali family in Kolkata, India. His father, Dr. Chitta Ranjan Das, was a Chief Scientist and Glass Technologist with Yera Glass, Alembic Group, in Vadodara and his mother Maya Das, has been a homemaker. Das grew up in Vadodara and attended the Rosary High School. [6]

He was a doctoral graduate and faculty member of University of Indonesia between 1956 and 1963, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources between 1978 and 1988, and Secretary General of OPEC between 1988 and 1994.
