Harstad (Norwegian, pronounced [hɐ̞̂ɻ.ʃt̠ɐ̞] ⓘ) or Hárstták (Northern Sami) [5] [6] is a city [1] in Harstad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The city is also the administrative centre of Harstad Municipality.
Trondenes Historical Center (Norwegian: Trondenes Historiske Senter) is a museum located in Trondenes, in the town of Harstad, in Troms county, Norway. [1] The museum covers the history of Trondenes and the surrounding areas. The museum displaying more than 2,000 years of history in the region, which was once a Viking Age power centre.
It is located on the northern edge of the town of Harstad. It is the main church for the Trondenes parish which is part of the Trondenes prosti ( deanery ) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland . The white, stone church was built in a long church style around the year 1435 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect .
The people of Harstad had to worship in a small chapel in Harstad for some time. After World War II , planning for a new church in Harstad intensified. In 1953, Sigurd Bjørhovde was hired as the architect for the new church, but it did not work out and then the nationally known architect Jan Inge Hovig was given the job.
