Andasol 1 cost around €300 million (US$380 million) to build. [12] Thermal energy storage costs roughly US$50 per kWh of capacity (150 lbs of salt per kWh at a storage temperature of 400 °C), according to Greg Glatzmaier of the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), totaling about 13% of Andasol's initial cost. The Andasol 1 power plant went online in November 2008, and has a thermal storage system which absorbs part of the heat produced in the solar field during the day. This heat is then stored in a molten salt mixture and used to generate electricity during the night, or when the sky is overcast.
Dan Arvizu is a mechanical engineer at the United States Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories, where he has taken on various roles over the course of more than 30 years. [1] Arvizu is also an expert in energy materials, technology commercialization and process sciences . [ 2 ]
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory projects that the levelized cost of wind power will decline about 25% from 2012 to 2030. [16] In fiscal year 2020, congressional appropriations for the Department of Energy contained $464.3 million for NREL. This total included the following amounts for its renewable energy technology programs: [17]
The 500-megawatt (MW) SCE/SES plant would extract about 2.75% of the radiation (1 kW/m 2; see Solar power for a discussion) that falls on its 4,500 acres (18.2 km 2). [73] For the 50 MW AndaSol Power Plant [74] that is being built in Spain (total area 1.95 km 2; ¾ sq. mi.) gross conversion efficiency comes out at 2.6%.
The 150 MW Andasol solar power station is a commercial parabolic trough solar thermal power plant, in Spain. The Andasol plant uses tanks of molten salt to store solar energy so that it can continue generating electricity even after sunset. [1]
