In 1932, the Church stated they could no longer afford to support the college financially and would close it unless the local valley could support it. In 1933, the residents of Graham County passed an initiative funding the school. The state of Arizona took over the school, changing the name to Gila Junior College of Graham County.
The name "Gila" refers to the Gila River Basin in the U.S. states of Arizona and New Mexico, where the Gila monster was once plentiful. [7] Heloderma means "studded skin", from the Ancient Greek words helos (ἧλος), "the head of a nail or stud", and derma (δέρμα), "skin".
The genus Heloderma contains the Gila monster (H. suspectum) and four species of beaded lizards. Their eyes are immobile and fixed in their heads. [2] [3] The Gila monster is a large, stocky, mostly slow-moving reptile that prefers arid deserts. Beaded lizards are seen to be more agile and seem to prefer more humid surroundings.

In the early 1990s, the school moved from its Palmdale location to a ranch in the Gila Wilderness, New Mexico. [3] The school was located approximately 9 miles north-east from the town of Reserve on New Mexico State Road 12. [1] The ranch was situated on 158 acres of land comprising two main areas, the upper ranch and the lower ranch.
