Des Moines Area Community College was created on March 18, 1966. [3] The first classes were held on the Ankeny [4] Campus in 1968. DMACC has experienced tremendous growth in the last two decades. In the fall of 2000, 10,803 students were enrolled at DMACC. By the fall of 2011, that number grew to 25,425.
ACMC operates a number of residency training and fellowship programs for newly graduated physicians, pharmacists and podiatrists. Each year, more than 400 residents, 600 medical students, and 800 nursing students train at the hospital. In 2016, ACMC opened a new eight story patient tower.

The program was first accredited by the National League for Nursing in 1971, receiving a six-year accreditation. [5] Prior to 1959, all students of the college had been female. The first male students entered the program that year. [6] As of 1982, a total of 1,301 students had graduated from the program. [7]
