If you install a new converter, just pour a half quart of fluid or so in there. It only has to lube the dry parts for that short time until the pump feeds it fluid. No need to dump two quarts or whatever in there, it simply makes a mess when you tip it up to install it, and does not help any more than just a tad bit of fluid being added.

My TH350 with a 9.5" converter used about 8 qts. You'll have to have it on level ground to check the level. Here is the procedure my tranny guy gave me (I was breaking in a new engine, too). Put 5 qts in. Do the engine break in. Check the level and add to the full mark. Cycle the shifter through the gears, holding each for 15 seconds or so.

I just installed an 11in. 2200 to 2600 stall converter in my th350, my question is how much fluid does it hold? The instructions I got with the converter says put 1qt. in the converter before installing, which I did. Then once it is installed, add 4qts. through the stick, and start up the motor and then add 2 more quarts.

You said you checked it in the morning and it was way high on the fluid level....The tranny needs to be at temp with motor running and on level ground to check level is why I ask the above. A new th350 tranny/converter combo will hold approx. 10-12 qt.s depending on converter size (8,9,10,12") cooler size, and/or pan depth.

In addressing some problems in a recently acquired 87 El Camino, I pulled the driven gear bullet to replace leaking seals. At least half a quart of tranny fluid poured out. If my memory serves me correctly, when I have pulled this speedometer gear housing in the past from other 350s, I only got a slight dribble of fluid coming out.

Just remember to stop your preliminary fill at 3 qts. Go beyond that with the motor off and you'll be mopping tranny fluid off the floor. That initial three quarts will provide safe lubrication of the trans and converter once you start your engine to put the rest of the fluid in.

  11. Deep tranny pans...worth it? - Team Chevelle

    www.chevelles.com/threads/deep-tranny-pans-worth-it.175271

I went with an affordable fix for my TH400. It was out of a car, and a shallow pan. The pans from truck trannys are about 1" deeper. This translates into roughly 150 cubic inches of extra fluid capacity. I got the pan for free in exchange for my old pan. Not as racy looking as a finned aluminum job, but certainly good bang for the buck.
