The Wisconsin Veteran's Home was founded in 1887 by the GAR to house veterans of the Civil War. It was unusual in that it allowed wives to live with the veterans and provided them individual cottages. In 1929 the state took over the home, and to this day it houses veterans of subsequent wars.
