Syracuse University established the university as a four-year institution in 1946. At the time, it was known as Utica College of Syracuse University. In 1995, it became a financially and legally independent institution, operating as Utica College without the Syracuse University affiliation.

He also coached for 15 years at the collegiate level, heading the men's lacrosse programs at Dartmouth from 1989 to 1998 and Utica College from 1999 to 2005.
