The program provides students with hands-on production and broadcast experience while also promoting their high school, and also enables schools to earn money for programs. In 2018, Pixellot and PlayOn! Sports partnered to bring automated sports production to U.S. high school sports, such as broadcast school events on the NFHS Network. [4]
Two broad categories apply to licensed stations owned by U.S. colleges and universities: Student-run — station where students play significant roles in programming, management, and other facets of operations, either on their own, through student government organizations, or under faculty supervision.
In 1989, a professional news program produced by the school's students began production, and later evolved into the well-known Cronkite NewsWatch TV news program. [1] In 2001, the school voted to change its name to Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. [1] The school received independent school status in 2004.

The school also offers a separate business journalism major, in conjunction with the Kenan–Flagler Business School, which follows a separate application policy.
