John Strype's map of 1720 describes London as consisting of four parts: The City of London, Westminster, Southwark and the eastern 'That Part Beyond the Tower'. [1] As London expanded, it absorbed many hundreds of existing towns and villages which continued to assert their local identities.
The modern borough was created in 1965 under the London Government Act 1963, which reorganised 86 boroughs and urban districts into 32 London boroughs and also created the Greater London Council. It was a merger of the old metropolitan boroughs of Chelsea and Kensington, and it inherited Kensington's royal borough status. [5]
