Sir James Whyte Black (14 June 1924 – 22 March 2010 [2]) was a Scottish physician and pharmacologist.Together with Gertrude B. Elion and George H. Hitchings, he shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988 for pioneering strategies for rational drug-design, which, in his case, led to the development of propranolol and cimetidine.
James Black was born in Newport, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1830 and 1831. Black was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jesse Miller. He served as associate judge of Perry County, Pennsylvania, in 1842 and 1843.
