Men's Road Running Shoes. Our lead tester for men's running shoes put each model through its paces in a range of mid-distance loops, long runs, recovery runs, quick-paced workouts, and sprinting sessions. Low differential for a road shoe. The Hoka Challenger 7 shoe is a versatile trail shoe that is suitable for occasional road use, making it one of our favorite crossover shoes. It provides comfort and support for trail runners tackling technical terrain but can joyfully adapt to the road that gets you to the trailhead.
How We Test Road Running Shoes. Our running experts have tested hundreds of pairs of running shoes since 2011, and more than 165 pairs of men's road running shoes specifically. Before even starting tests, we complete extensive market research to determine which competitors are worthy of entering the lineup.
The La Sportiva Bushido III is designed for those who seek a lightweight, race-ready shoe with exceptional stability. Its rigid heel and low stack height of 30 mm provide a sense of freedom on technical terrain without compromising stability. While many stability-focused shoes can feel sluggish, the Bushido III stands out as the quickest and ...
The outsole of the Blissfeel 2 is thick and sturdy, unlike many of the ultralight shoes on the market. The landing platform provides plenty of cushion with balanced flexibility, so the outsole never feels clunky. The instep of the Blissfeel is super straightforward, with a neutral shape and compact cushioning.
We tested this model on the track a number of times and found that while it does well at 3k-5k paced work, the height of the shoe starts to feel unstable in turns faster than mile pace. The Vaporfly 3 isn't a stable shoe, but it does what its designed for very well. Credit: Nathaniel Bailey.
Our favorite feature of the Cloud X is the smooth, seamless sockliner throughout the upper. This makes a huge difference after the endorphins wear off from the first few miles, and the rubbing and chafe starts to set in. The toe box is nice and roomy, but the laces also lockdown for a snug ride if so desired.
The Altra Lone Peak 8 is a reliable and faithful trail running shoe that has been restored to its former glory. Altra updated the upper on the eighth iteration, providing a more durable-feeling and comfortable upper than its predecessor had. Standing at 20 mm thick with a zero-drop heel-to-toe differential, the Lone Peak 8 is incredibly stable ...
In the Triumph 21, the PWRRUN+ feels soft and uniquely bouncy. With a measured 38mm in the heel and 27mm in the forefoot, this shoe has one of the higher stack heights in the test, and it shows every time you land. There is no bottoming out even on the hardest impacts, and the 11mm drop feels natural with a very slight rocker geometry.
Vibram-soled trail shoes often perform incredibly well in this metric, and the Speedgoat 6 is no exception. With a Vibram Megagrip outsole, the ride in the Speedgoat is nothing if not confidence-inspiring. Hoka reconfigured the outsole pattern — which allegedly mimics a goat's hoof — for ultimate grip. The multidirectional, 4 mm deep lugs ...
